Country/Region: Italy / Abruzzo

Varietal: Montepulciano

The Branella vineyard is a two hectare plot planted in 1981. The soils are a mix of blue clay and sand. Fermented with native yeasts in cement tanks and then aged a further two years before bottling.

2020 is the first release of both single vineyards at Emidio Pepe: Casa Pepe & Branella. These two wines replace the one Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from old vines. That is to say, there will only be these two cru wines and not, also a third non-vineyard designated wine. Branella has different zones within it with distinct geological variations. Some classic "speckled" blue clay marls on the northern / top of the vineyard. Distinct sandy zone in the center with a lower pH. 1 btl per customer.

95 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous: "Dusty and floral, the 2020 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne Branella slowly blossoms with a beguiling mix of crushed ashen stones, incense and dried roses lifted by a mentholated freshness. This is pure class, silky smooth and deeply expressive with violet-laced red fruits and a chalky concentration that slowly coats the palate. While structured and tense, the 2020 is already so appealing leaving a cranberry-like bitterness that puckers the cheeks." 07/23
